... that on February 19 is Serf Freedom Day? In 1861, Czar Alexander II of Russia abolished serfdom in Russia, thus freeing the serfs who previously had been bound to the land much like slaves. The emancipation of the serfs was the single most important event in 19th-century Russian history. It was the beginning of the end for the landed aristocracy's monopoly of power.
