Did you know...
... that on March 11 is Shad Return Day? In the early history of America, the shad ascended up the Hudson River on March 11th with such clockwork regularity that the Dutch colonists called the shad "elft" (eleven fish). In other places, the shad would ascend to spawn as late as May.
