... that on February 27 is Longfellow Day? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the first American poet to earn a living writing verse, was born in Portland, Maine, in 1807. An educator and poet, whose works include Paul Revere's Ride, The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline, he was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy.
